General anesthesia is a sedation technique that decreases ones consciousness. General anesthesia is rarely used for dentistry. Stanley Dentistry prefers to use IV Sedation over General Anesthesia. 

Almost every dental treatment can be managed with inhalation, oral sedation or IV sedation. Therefore, there is really no need to take a patient to that level of sedation. Oral surgeons routinely use general anesthesia for their treatment services because they are surgical in nature. People who are medically compromised (ie. very sick) are usually the ones who are admitted to the hospital to have general anesthesia.
