Caring for Your Invisalign Aligners

Caring for Your Invisalign Aligners

The whole experience of Invisalign aligners is completely different from other braces and orthodontic alternatives, including the process and procedures for taking care of them. Invisalign aligners are colorless, but can stain easily without proper care. By following some simple strategies, you can keep your aligners clean and avoid purchasing costly replacements.

How to Clean Your Invisalign Aligners

It is recommended that you clean your aligners every time you brush your teeth, to ensure that stains don’t have time to sit and soak. It is also important that you clear away any plaque after meals, as anything on your teeth will be between your teeth and the aligner –yuck!

Remove your Invisalign aligner from your mouth and rinse it thoroughly under water. The water used to rinse your device should be room temperature. This is important to remember since extreme temperatures may damage the Invisalign material.

Use regular toothpaste and a toothbrush (or retainer brush) to clean your aligner thoroughly. To do this, brush the device in a circular motion, ensuring that you get into all of the nooks and crannies of the Invisalign aligner. After thoroughly scrubbing your aligner, rinse it again with room temperature water to remove the toothpaste and dislodged debris.

Take a look at your cleaned aligners. Do you see any calcium or tartar buildup, or any food material still stuck to the aligners? Take special care to inspect your aligner to ensure that all debris is removed, as tartar and calcium can build up in your aligner just like on your teeth! Calcium buildup will look like white residue and may cause your aligner to appear cloudy. If needed, repeat the cleaning process.

If you do see any buildup on your aligner, soak your Invisalign in denture cleaner according to package directions. This will dissolve any buildup and ensure that your aligners are fresh and clean for the next wear.
