Dangers of Whitening in the Mall
Lately, we have had many patients inquire about the teeth whitening kiosks in the mall. Many people see the lower costs and want to jump on the opportunity to get fast, cheap, results. The problem is, what people are failing to recognize is that they are jeopardizing their own safety when they get dental procedures done in a non medical setting.
Cases have been popping up all over news outlets of people who went to the mall for whitening and ended up contracting painful infections and needing to go see a doctor to receive antibiotics. After all the work required to fix the mall employee’s mistakes, you end up spending more time and money than if you had just gone to the dentist in the first place.
So, with all of these horror stories warning people to be wary, why are people still choosing this option? It is easy to be fooled and sold by what you see when you are there. The kiosks have their employees dressed in scrub-like outfits that give off the feeling that these employees are medically trained, but they are not. The kiosks in the mall are not regulated, but they are allowed to operate within the law because the employees only hand you the whitening material and you place it in your mouth yourself. Since it is self-administered, these kiosk owners have been able to find a loophole that allows them to operate legally but also poses major risks for the “patients” who choose this method.
We recommend always consulting your doctor if you have any questions about medically inclined procedures. Our office offers complimentary cosmetic consults allowing you to have one on one time with the doctor to discuss all of your whitening options. At Stanley Dentistry, we offer a variety of whitening options with the intent to be able to meet every patient’s individual needs. We encourage our patients to make informed decisions and are here to help you along every step of the way.View All News
