Dental Insurance 101
Insurance. Love it or hate it, you can’t ignore it when it comes to your dental care.
Between changes in coverage, life events and evolving health, your dental plan is sure to leave you confused. Here’s our take on a few key points:
Times- they are a changin’
Dental Insurance first became popular in the early 1970s. At that time, most companies offered about $1000 of coverage annually and currently most insurance plans offer about $1000 of annual coverage. Nope- that’s not a typo. Dental insurance coverage has not changed in 40 years. If dental insurance had adapted to evolving economic conditions as health insurance has, most insured patients would enjoy $5000-6000 in benefits every year.
One question we often hear is, ‘Are you in network with (fill in the blank here)?’ Stanley Dentistry in Cary NC is not an “in-network” provider with any insurance company and the reason is simple—with contracts come limitations. And, we will never compromise our standard of care according to insurance company policies. We pride ourselves on our quest to be the best. Our doctors and staff attend hundreds of hours of continuing education every year to stay abreast of trends and evidence-based dentistry.
We refuse to trade quality for insurance compliance. We treat our patients as if we’re treating our own family. Therefore, we form a treatment plan based on current technology and best practices, not what the insurance company mandates. Regardless of insurance provider, we are happy to file insurance claims on behalf of our patients as a courtesy.
Ways to maximize your dental dollar!
Here are a few reminders on ways to stretch your dental dollars:
Give your Dentist a complete health history.
The world of insurance runs on codes. A one-digit difference in the code can make hundreds of dollars of difference in the final patient responsibility. While insurance coverage is mostly uniform, there are exceptions. Be sure to give your dentist a clear picture of any health concerns you may have. Treatment standards can vary with a variety of health conditions including diabetes, heart disease and pregnancy to name a few.
Brush and floss! Your hygienist isn’t telling you this for his/her health. It’s for yours!
While good dental hygiene can decrease the need for more extensive dental treatment in many cases, there is occasionally a need for advanced care.
Don’t miss those cleaning appointments
The reason is simple. Regular visits to the dentist give your doctor the opportunity to identify issues early. Small problems are easier and less expensive to treat than larger ones.
Always ask your provider for a pre-payment discount
After all, they are running a business. They have to pay for a building, state-of-the-art equipment and staff. Many times your dentist will discount your treatment when they don’t have to wait for payment. It never hurts to ask.
