Me Fine Foundation’s Christmas in July Event Supports Critically Ill Children
On Wednesday July 27, Stanley Dentistry’s Development Coordinator – Catherine Shireman – visited UNC Children’s Hospital for a Christmas in July event. Catherine was part of a group volunteering with local non-profit Me Fine Foundation, where she is a Board Member.
The mission of Me Fine Foundation is to provide hope to critically ill children treated by Children’s Hospitals in North Carolina and their families through financial assistance, emotional support and necessary resources, regardless of race, diagnosis, religious affiliation or economic status. Lori Lee of Princeton, NC founded the organization after her young son Folden was diagnosed with and treated for cancer. Her family’s experiences led to the creation of Me Fine Foundation in 2005.
This is the seventh year Me Fine has hosted Christmas in July at both Duke Children’s Hospital and UNC Children’s Hospital. The event is the result of fundraising and wish list donations collected from area businesses and individual donors. In addition to toys, games and prizes for patients, there were guest appearances by Santa Clause and The Avengers. Parents and children came to the recreation room at UNC Children’s for a welcome respite from illness and hospital life.
Me Fine Executive Director Joey Powell was thrilled with the number of volunteers and donations. He said, “I am continually floored by the annual support we see for this program. Christmas in July is a confluence of the hard work of a lot of people at different agencies, but the look on the children’s faces makes every drop of sweat worth it. We are lucky to have Catherine on our board and appreciate Stanley Dentistry’s support of our work.”
Dr. Bobbi Stanley, owner of Stanley Dentistry, has always supported philanthropic interests of her own and encourages her employees to pursue charitable interests that inspire them. “My husband, Dr. Robert Stanley, and I were happy to learn more about Me Fine Foundation’s mission and Catherine’s involvement in the organization. It is such a worthwhile endeavor and we’re happy to have a small role in furthering their work.”
