Obstructive Sleep Apnea
December 21, 2015
What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)?
It is a potentially serious sleep disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep.
Approximately 40% of adults over age 40 snore. Of those, about 70% are suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
If you or a loved one are snoring, it could be OSA. Here’s what you need to know:
- OSA is a serious condition that requires immediate attention.
- Risk of heart attack is greater with OSA than the risk associated with being overweight or having hypertension combined.
- Since sleep is low quality, OSA patients are considered high-risk drivers.
- Due to the increased health issues associated with OSA, life expectancy is decreased.
What should you do if you think you or a loved one suffers from Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Make an appointment in our Cary NC dental office. Our dentists and clinicians are trained in oral appliance therapy and can help you decide which option might be best for your individual needs.
What are the options for OSA?
You and your dentist will discuss options. Usually, a sleep study and a consultation from a sleep physician are ordered at a local sleep clinic. Pending the results from the study, your dentist and sleep physician may recommend an Oral Sleep Appliance. This non-invasive appliance will adjust your bite so that you are breathing normally and your airway is clear. The time from initial consultation to fitting of the sleep appliance usually takes about two weeks—a mere 14 days to a more restful night. In many instances, oral sleep appliances are covered by health insurance.
