Every month, reporters from around the globe solicit expert opinions and case studies for a variety of topics. As a key opinion leader in the dental industry, Dr. Bobbi Stanley is often asked to weigh in on dental and oral health concerns.

When approached about a patient that had seen significant improvement in overall health with changes in their oral health care, Dr. Bobbi immediately thought of longtime superstar patient Ros S. Ros works for Lifetime Fitness and is not only physically fit herself, she regularly counsels others in their quest for better health. So when Ros was having trouble making it through the day without resting and dosing up with caffeine, she really could not identify the cause. She was eating right, exercising, getting a decent amount of sleep and yet felt tired all the time.

At her six-month dental visit, she posed the question to Cary family dentist Dr. Bobbi, Why am I tired all the time? The wellness exam revealed that although there was no pain and nothing noticeable (to the untrained eye), Ros was suffering from periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a condition where mouth bacteria build up releases toxins and cause inflammation and irritation of the gums. It can lead to bone and tooth loss. While this condition appears to be concentrated solely in the mouth, it actually can affect other parts of the body and overall health as well.

Much research has been done correlating oral health issues with problems throughout the body. Studies have established clear links between some respiratory illnesses and complications with diabetes management. There is also evidence connecting pregnancy complications, heart disease, hypertension and other inflammatory issues such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Periodontal disease can be controlled with proper care and that's just what Dr. Bobbi advised Ros to do. "We did a deep cleaning and followed up with regular perio maintenance and Ros saw a marked improvement in energy levels over time", said Dr. Bobbi. She continued, "Oral health is the gateway to overall health and I'm glad to see that connection coming to the forefront."

Have you noticed reduced energy or unwarranted feelings of fatigue? You could be experiencing lethargy due to oral health issues. The best way to ensure optimal oral health is to maintain a twice-yearly schedule of dental exams and cleanings so you can potentially avoid problems before they start.
