At Stanley Dentistry, we pride ourselves on being one of the oldest family-owned dental offices in the Triangle. Dr. Bobbi Stanley opened the practice back in 1995 so we’ve been operating for twenty-five years. During those twenty-five years, Dr. Bobbi’s husband, Dr. Robert Stanley, decided to go to dental school as well and joined the practice as our surgeon and dental implantologist. Today, we also have Dr. David Baronowski along with two hygienists, a talented lineup of dental assistants, front desk staff, and a marketing team.
We’ve overcome everything from the 2008 recession to this year’s catastrophic COVID-19 shutdown and we always come back stronger than before. How do we do that? It’s all about our team and our patients. Everyone who works in our office, from the assistants to the doctors, is incredibly passionate about helping as many people as possible obtain healthy, beautiful smiles. We truly love helping people find their “smile confidence”. When you have that sort of pure passion, people tend to notice, which is how we’ve managed to create such an amazing patient base. “So I was looking to get veneers done. I went online and looked up reviews about good practices in the area. I saw that this practice had such good reviews so I came in and they gave me my options. “My name is Taylor Fisher and I grew up in South Florida. Essentially, when I was in nursing school in college, I was on the equestrian team and I had a really traumatic accident riding a horse. I shattered the whole left side of my jaw. I originally had four surgeries to reconstruct everything that first year when I was in nursing school — which was rough, really rough. When I graduated and moved to North Carolina, that’s when I started to try and get everything in place — fix everything other than the actual jaw area, which was fixed. But now, it was more dental and orthodontic.
I got four different answers from four different people telling me what to do. One endodontist was like ‘We could do a root canal but we’d have to slice open the entire gum line.” It was all this crazy stuff. I felt very confused because I didn’t know who to believe — some people were saying just take it out…So, it was scary. I didn’t know who to really trust. The people who took care of me for the original surgeries — one was in Miami and then my other doctors were in Boston. So, I was in a hard place because I didn’t feel like I trusted anyone here.
I had a patient in the ICU and his daughter was an oral maxillofacial surgeon. So, somehow, we got to talking and she also happened to live in Boston. We were talking about that and eventually it came up that she was an oral maxillofacial surgeon. We had that kind of report where I was like, ‘Can I ask you a question off the cuff? Because I really don’t know what to do in this situation and I’m getting so many different answers.’ So, I told her what was going on, with what had happened to me, and that I didn’t know where to proceed with getting implants and should this tooth stay or should it go — and on this side, what should I do? She basically looked at me and said ‘Well, you need to go to Stanley Dentistry.’
I asked her why and she said, ‘I trained under Dr. Rob and I know Bobbi really well. And [Dr. Rob] is very good with trauma and they have a great office, they do everything together in the same office. They can do the crowns, the orthodontics, everything — all in the same office.’ For me, that was like, ding ding ding! Finally! As someone who’s already been through a lot of trauma, already been through a lot of healthcare expenses and everything…knowing that I can have everything done at the same place was huge. And on top of that, she was vouching for their ability and their character. She was like ‘I trust them. My parents are going there.’
It was great and when I made an appointment here, I felt completely at home. It was just a great experience. I still had a lot to do in order to fix everything but I knew I was in good hands and I trusted what they said. Everything they explained to me was very logical, ‘this is how it’s going to be.’ I never felt uncomfortable or doubted their advice on what to do.
Really, all in all, it’s been a long journey and finally, I’m on the other end and I can’t thank them enough for finishing everything in my mouth but also for everything that they’ve done here. I really do think that, in the dental system, this is what you really want as a patient. To be able to go to people who have everything all together in the same place… because I can tell you, it’s really hard when you have a different oral maxillofacial surgeon, an endodontist, an orthodontist, a dentist. You have to go to multiple different places just to get the resources that you need. And then everyone disagrees with how they think things should be done. It makes you stressed out because you don’t know who to trust.
Unfortunately, coming from a medical background, I know how it goes — different people have different experiences and doctors are the same. Everyone has a different idea of what to do. I think at Stanley, they really take pride in working together, really exploring all options, and deciding that this is the best course of action. I think that’s really special.
I would want people to know that they [Dr. Rob and Dr. Bobbi] take a very systematic approach to what your major problems are. They work really hard to address that from all angles and to make sure it is being addressed. They really want you to have a better quality of life. I never once felt like just a patient — just someone who’s coming in and coming out. I’ve felt like family when coming in here.
They take everything in stride. All my dental visits…they know I have anxiety! So they always make sure they have this numbing medication ready — and this is just for dental cleanings — because I have a lot of sensitivity on my bottom teeth and I get very scared because I don’t know what to expect. This is something they do every time. They always have it ready. To me, that’s really, really thoughtful care. Knowing that these are the things that I need to feel comfortable — and I know it’s a pain in the butt and I know it’s a lot to ask for — but they have never made me feel bad for needing those things.
As a patient, you could never ask for anything more. For the people who’re taking care of you to take care of you like one of their own. That’s what it feels like when I’m here.

Hi, Dr. Robert Stanley, Smile Engineer. Today, I’d like to talk to you about sedation dentistry. So, there are a lot of different levels to sedation dentistry in terms of what we can offer people who are anxious or just need to be relaxed a little bit when they come into the dental office.
The first one we can do is pill sedation. We can give you something to relax you before you come and a couple of pills when you’re in the office. Now, I always like to warn people with this pill sedation, that it’s important to understand that this is like having a glass of wine or something. It just takes the edge off most of the time. If you think that you are going to need a little bit more than that, then that’s where IV sedation comes into play.
When we do IV sedation, we place an IV, usually in the arm somewhere or the hand, and the IV allows us to administer medication very rapidly. Now, the nice thing about this is that we can control the situation much more quickly and efficiently by using IV sedation. If we want to give you just a little bit more to make you a little bit more relaxed, we can do that. And we can stop it and as soon as we stop, the medicine wears off very, very quickly.
So, IV sedation is excellent for people that have not been to the dentist in a long time because of fear. We have a lot of those patients come in and they’ve had a bad experience when they were younger. They say: “Hey, I’m just really having a hard time just sitting across from you and talking to you.” Those kinds of people? Those are the most excellent patients for IV sedation because you come in, we wrap you in a warm blanket, you go off to la-la land, and when you wake up, your restorations are all done.
One of the nice things about doing IV sedation in an office like ours is that we have the ability to do a multitude of procedures all at the same time. So, say, for instance, you need a filling, and a crown, and a root canal, and an extraction — a variety of different things. You can get them all done in one short appointment. So, it’s a very efficient use of your time.

In response to the spread of COVID-19 in North Carolina, our office has decided to postpone all elective treatment until May 11th. Your health and wellness is always our number one priority. Like our in-person consultations, our virtual consultations are 100% free. They offer patients some time with the doctors to ask questions about different procedures. The doctor may ask you to take some pictures of your smile so they can start putting together a customized treatment plan. Once our office opens back up, you can come in and immediately get started with whatever procedures the doctor has recommended.
Unless you are experiencing an emergency, we recommend scheduling a virtual consultation at this time. We may not be able to give a diagnosis, but we will be able to answer some of your questions and begin your journey to a healthier, brighter smile. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: if you have dental insurance, the best way to save yourself a lot of money is to remember the “use it or lose it” principle. Every year, we run a campaign encouraging our patients to schedule their cleanings, fillings, and other dental services before the end of the year, since dental insurance doesn’t rollover. If patients don’t use the amount allocated by their insurance by the end of the year, they lose that money.
August probably seems a little early to begin thinking about the end of the year but schedules fill up quickly. Back-to-school is just around the corner and before you know it, the holidays will be here. Evade the unnecessary anxiety by scheduling early and using your dental insurance before it’s too late.
Dental insurance is an overly complicated web of unnecessary rules, insane numbers, and fine print. Very few of our patients truly understand how it works since the insurance companies do their best to keep anyone and everyone in the dark. They want their policyholders “out of the know” because that often means making more money. If you don’t know how something works, you won’t notice when the system cheats you.
In dental insurance, that cheat is losing the services you already paid for at the end of each calendar year. In a typical dental insurance plan, you probably get the following:
If you only get one cleaning in May and don’t go in for another one six months later, you lose the money you paid to the insurance company. The insurance company is happy because you paid them for a cleaning that they never had to cover. If you try to go in for a cleaning in January to use one of your two cleanings from the previous year, you’ll just end up using money from your current annual plan instead.
It is never a good idea to sit on needed dental work. Many serious operations, from knee replacement to open-heart surgery, require dental clearance so it’s best to stay abreast of any dental concerns. Of course, that isn’t always easy and we understand that. A lot of people push dentist visits to the back burner because of financial concerns. If you need a lot of treatment, it can get expensive.
The thing is, a lot of our patients come into the office for the first time not knowing that their insurance will cover the majority of their treatment. They assume that insurance won’t cover things like fillings, crowns, or oral cancer screenings when in reality, they will. If you haven’t already gone past your limit for the year, many dental insurance companies will cover a variety of services.
The best way to know what your dental insurance covers is to come into the office and meet with our insurance experts. They’ll give you a complimentary insurance check to see what insurance will and won’t cover.
If you have a dental insurance plan, you’ve already paid for regular visits to the dentist. You’ve already paid for the occasional filling or crown. Isn’t it better to schedule those appointments and effectively use that money instead of allowing the dental insurance companies to scam you out of hundreds of dollars?
We hear this a lot: “What’s the point of cosmetic dentistry?” For some, it seems like an unnecessary luxury. Things like fillings and root canals fight infection but veneers are “just for looks.” With this sort of thinking, cosmetic dentistry becomes a waste of money. If it doesn’t treat something that’s wrong, what’s the point?
People who assume that cosmetic dentistry doesn’t treat anything aren’t taking into consideration every aspect of the term “health.” Root canals and fillings treat infection but health is not just the absence of infection. According to the World Health Organization, health is “complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” To put it in our context, cosmetic dentistry treats mental health.
We’re not trying to say that cosmetic dentistry will cure someone’s depression or bipolar disorder. Mental health disorders are affected by a variety of factors, some of which only medicine can fix.
However, for people who have low self-confidence because of a gap in their teeth or because of their dark gums, cosmetic dentistry can help. Feeling good about yourself both inside and out is an important part of mental health. We all want to be confident with how we look but sometimes, we need an extra boost. For some, that means getting a new wardrobe or some hair dye. For others, that means going to a cosmetic dentist.
It’s not a matter of vanity — it’s about fixing something that you’ve disliked for years and years. Some of our patients have hidden their smiles for their whole lives because they’ve felt so embarrassed. If there’s a way to alleviate them of that feeling, is it wrong to want to take it?
Getting cosmetic dentistry isn’t about wanting to impress people or flaunting high status. When you really look into why people get cosmetic dentistry, it’s because they want to feel better about themselves. They want to stop worrying about that stain or crack on their front tooth. We hear a lot of questions about dental health from our patients: “How do I get rid of bad breath?”,“When do I need my wisdom teeth removed?”,“Will my veneers stain?” Those, we anticipate — we’re a dental office after all. We love helping patients understand their oral health better. What might be a little surprising is how often we hear insurance-based inquiries. “Are you in-network with (fill in the blank here)?” is undoubtedly the most frequently asked question in our office.
Patients assume that dental insurance is comparable to normal health insurance because there’s similar verbiage. Unfortunately, the two share very few similarities. This leads to a lot of confusion, hence the inundation of dental insurance questions we receive daily. We’re here to clear the air on what exactly dental insurance is and how it can both help (and hurt) your wallet.
With health insurance, you’re paying the insurance company to cover the costs of potential injuries, check-ups, etc. Health insurance has its own problems but it typically does cover at least part of big, medical expenditures.
Dental insurance does not. If you’re paying for dental insurance, you’re essentially paying for a dental coupon. You have a certain amount of money (typically $1000) that you can spend on dental care for the year. If you break a tooth and need immediate care but you’ve already spent that $1000, your dental insurance will not cover the treatment. To make matters worse, if you go all year and only spend $200 on dental care, the remaining $800 does not rollover. You lose all that money.
If dental insurance is one of your employment benefits, use it. Schedule your six-month wellness visits and don’t let it go to waste. If you don’t have dental insurance, consider paying out-of-pocket. We know that sounds scary but in the long run, you will save money. Dental insurance companies stay afloat because they rely on people’s ignorance. They know that most people don’t know how dental insurance works.
