At Stanley Dentistry, we pride ourselves on being one of the oldest family-owned dental offices in the Triangle. Dr. Bobbi Stanley opened the practice back in 1995 so we’ve been operating for twenty-five years. During those twenty-five years, Dr. Bobbi’s husband, Dr. Robert Stanley, decided to go to dental school as well and joined the practice as our surgeon and dental implantologist. Today, we also have Dr. David Baronowski along with two hygienists, a talented lineup of dental assistants, front desk staff, and a marketing team.
We’ve overcome everything from the 2008 recession to this year’s catastrophic COVID-19 shutdown and we always come back stronger than before. How do we do that? It’s all about our team and our patients. “Hello everyone! Dr. Robert Stanley, Smile Engineer here. Today I want to talk to you about solutions for gum recession. If you’ve been diagnosed with having gums that are moving away from the tooth or your teeth are starting to look long, there are two main types of solutions that we can do [to fix it]. They’re both grafting solutions. The only difference is where the graft material comes from. The first option is to take graft material from somewhere else in the body. Typically, it comes from the roof of the mouth. We then simply move it to the area that needs it. And then we put it [the grafting material] on the roots of those exposed teeth so that they’re protected.
The second option, which sounds a whole lot better to most people, is an option where we actually open up a package and we take out an acellular dermal matrix. This basically just means that the material comes out of a bag. We hydrate it and then we place the grafting material over the defect. In both scenarios, we get great results but there is some clinical decision making that needs to be determined behind the scenes. Your doctor will take care of [those decisions] to make sure they are giving you the right solution for the right location in the mouth. Some of these solutions work better in certain areas than others.
So, why do we do root coverage? If we have this lengthening of the tooth, why do we need to do any of these procedures? When you see longer teeth, and the gums are running away from the tooth, what you’re actually seeing underneath that is bone loss. We’re not just seeing the gums getting longer and running away from the tooth, but the bone underneath is melting away. If the bone melts away too much around a tooth, you can imagine that eventually that tooth would become loose and you might lose the tooth. So, the main reason why we’d want to do an intervention where we stop this from occurring (or we slow it down significantly) is to prevent the loss of the tooth long-term.
The second reason we would do it is for aesthetics. Say, for instance, when you smile you have this defect in your smile line. You see these really long teeth and you’re like, “I don’t want my teeth to be really long in this region — I want them to look like they were when I was younger.” That would be an aesthetic reason to get gum grafting done.”
Gum grafting is considered an oral surgery since it involves some minor suturing, and, in certain cases, removal of gum tissue from another part of the mouth. For some people, that may sound a little scary but you can rest assured that, in our office, gum grafting is a routine procedure that our team has perfected. The type of sedation we use depends on the length of your specific procedure and your own desires. If you wish to not remember the surgery at all, we can use IV sedation. In other cases, we may just use a local anesthetic and an oral sedative. Post-procedure, most patients use over-the-counter painkillers to manage mild discomfort.
If you have dental anxiety, we recommend talking to your doctor about the different sedation options so you can choose the one that’s right for you.
Before we do any sort of procedure at Stanley Dentistry, we like to do a consultation first. During the consultation, we go over different treatment options and lay out all the finances. We’ll take a look at your teeth and gums to make sure you’re a good candidate for the surgery. If you are, we can set a date for the procedure.

Like our in-person consultations, our virtual consultations are 100% free. They offer patients some time with the doctors to ask questions about different procedures. The doctor may ask you to take some pictures of your smile so they can start putting together a customized treatment plan. Once our office opens back up, you can come in and immediately get started with whatever procedures the doctor has recommended.
Unless you are experiencing an emergency, we recommend scheduling a virtual consultation at this time. We may not be able to give a diagnosis, but we will be able to answer some of your questions and begin your journey to a healthier, brighter smile. So many of our patients go into their first consultation thinking they need one thing and, after talking to the doctor, leave knowing they need something completely different. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: if you have dental insurance, the best way to save yourself a lot of money is to remember the “use it or lose it” principle. Every year, we run a campaign encouraging our patients to schedule their cleanings, fillings, and other dental services before the end of the year, since dental insurance doesn’t rollover. If patients don’t use the amount allocated by their insurance by the end of the year, they lose that money.
August probably seems a little early to begin thinking about the end of the year but schedules fill up quickly. Back-to-school is just around the corner and before you know it, the holidays will be here. Evade the unnecessary anxiety by scheduling early and using your dental insurance before it’s too late.
Dental insurance is an overly complicated web of unnecessary rules, insane numbers, and fine print. Very few of our patients truly understand how it works since the insurance companies do their best to keep anyone and everyone in the dark. They want their policyholders “out of the know” because that often means making more money. If you don’t know how something works, you won’t notice when the system cheats you.
In dental insurance, that cheat is losing the services you already paid for at the end of each calendar year. In a typical dental insurance plan, you probably get the following:
If you only get one cleaning in May and don’t go in for another one six months later, you lose the money you paid to the insurance company. The insurance company is happy because you paid them for a cleaning that they never had to cover. If you try to go in for a cleaning in January to use one of your two cleanings from the previous year, you’ll just end up using money from your current annual plan instead.
It is never a good idea to sit on needed dental work. Many serious operations, from knee replacement to open-heart surgery, require dental clearance so it’s best to stay abreast of any dental concerns. Of course, that isn’t always easy and we understand that. A lot of people push dentist visits to the back burner because of financial concerns. If you need a lot of treatment, it can get expensive.
The thing is, a lot of our patients come into the office for the first time not knowing that their insurance will cover the majority of their treatment. They assume that insurance won’t cover things like fillings, crowns, or oral cancer screenings when in reality, they will. If you haven’t already gone past your limit for the year, many dental insurance companies will cover a variety of services.
The best way to know what your dental insurance covers is to come into the office and meet with our insurance experts. They’ll give you a complimentary insurance check to see what insurance will and won’t cover.
If you have a dental insurance plan, you’ve already paid for regular visits to the dentist. You’ve already paid for the occasional filling or crown. We hear a lot of questions about dental health from our patients: “How do I get rid of bad breath?”,“When do I need my wisdom teeth removed?”,“Will my veneers stain?” Those, we anticipate — we’re a dental office after all. We love helping patients understand their oral health better. What might be a little surprising is how often we hear insurance-based inquiries. “Are you in-network with (fill in the blank here)?” is undoubtedly the most frequently asked question in our office.
Patients assume that dental insurance is comparable to normal health insurance because there’s similar verbiage. Unfortunately, the two share very few similarities. This leads to a lot of confusion, hence the inundation of dental insurance questions we receive daily. We’re here to clear the air on what exactly dental insurance is and how it can both help (and hurt) your wallet.
With health insurance, you’re paying the insurance company to cover the costs of potential injuries, check-ups, etc. Health insurance has its own problems but it typically does cover at least part of big, medical expenditures.
Dental insurance does not. If you’re paying for dental insurance, you’re essentially paying for a dental coupon. You have a certain amount of money (typically $1000) that you can spend on dental care for the year. If you break a tooth and need immediate care but you’ve already spent that $1000, your dental insurance will not cover the treatment. To make matters worse, if you go all year and only spend $200 on dental care, the remaining $800 does not rollover. You lose all that money.
If dental insurance is one of your employment benefits, use it. Schedule your six-month wellness visits and don’t let it go to waste. If you don’t have dental insurance, consider paying out-of-pocket. We know that sounds scary but in the long run, you will save money. Dental insurance companies stay afloat because they rely on people’s ignorance. They know that most people don’t know how dental insurance works.

On Wednesday January 25, Dr. Robert Stanley and Dr. Bobbi Stanley, Wake County’s Best Dentist traveled to snowy Madison, Wisconsin for the 10th annual Meeting of the Minds (MOM) Dental Mastermind Group.
A mastermind group is a gathering of like-minded individuals that support one another’s work toward similar goals. It is a concept that dates back to gatherings such as Knights of the Round Table and has been utilized in more modern history with innovators like Henry Ford and politicians such as Franklin Roosevelt’s “Brain Trust”.
The Mastermind Group has 15 members including dentists and practice administrators from across the country. The group has been meeting for ten years to discuss the latest trends and techniques in general, implant and cosmetic dentistry, as well as best practices in dental clinic management.
Dr. Robert Stanley presented a lecture on comparisons between the pinhole technique and the technique he perfected and dubbed the “no-hole technique” for gingival (gum) restoration. Additionally he announced his Top Ten Best Practices in Dentistry for 2016 and discussed indications for use of the Ellman Radiosurge.
Dr. Bobbi Stanley presented on the latest advancements and techniques in orthodontic treatments, including growth and development. She also gave a presentation on oral myofunctional therapy and sleep apnea in children.
