What are the different parts of a dental implants?

“Hi, Dr. Robert Stanley, Smile Engineer here. I want to tell you ‘What is a dental implant?’ A dental implant has three parts — so I have a model here to help illustrate it.

The top part is the part you actually want. This is the part that is in the mouth. It is called a crown. It’s what you want — you want a replacement tooth.

If we take this part off and set it aside, you’ll note that there is an abutment. [That is] this part here in the middle. This part screws into the implant. If I unscrew this, it comes out and it has a little thread on it. And it’s customizable. So, we have different shapes and sizes in the office to allow us to customize this to your solution.

And then we have the actual dental implant, which is this part. This part, if properly placed, you never see. It’s like the foundation for your house. If you pour a foundation for your house, you never see the foundation once the house is built on top of it because it’s been properly done. So, properly placed, you never see this. All implants have three parts: the implant itself, the abutment that screws into it, and the crown that goes on top.”

How long do dental implants last?

A major factor in dental implant success is, as the video says, placement. Even the slightest error can have huge consequences when it comes to placement. Doctors who place implants without a guided system risk placing implants that are bound to fail. If the implant is made of high-quality materials, is placed using a guide, and the patient takes the post-procedure instructions seriously, the implant could last a lifetime.
