What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that completely covers a portion of the tooth or dental implant. Some people refer to dental crowns as tooth “caps” because they fit over the tooth. Dental crowns can be used to improve the appearance of teeth or repair and strengthen a damaged tooth.

Why would I need a dental crown?

You might need a dental crown if you:

  • Have a cracked or weak tooth
  • Have a worn-down tooth
  • Recently had a root canal and want to protect that tooth
  • Have a cavity that is too big to be filled
  • Have a discolored or misshapen tooth

How does CEREC work?

Before CEREC, dentists used to take putty impressions of patients’ mouths and then send the results to a specialized lab that would actually make the crown. The process was long, uncomfortable, and expensive.

In the late 1980s, everything changed with the invention of the CEREC mill. CEREC was the first in-office milling unit to hit the market and has continued to be the most popular. With CEREC, gone are the gross putty impressions and time-wasting middle-men.

Because the CEREC system does everything digitally, the process is exceedingly faster and easier for both doctor and patient. A doctor takes an easy digital scan of your mouth, sends the scan to the in-office mill, and within half an hour, you’ll have a brand new, custom-fit crown.

Frequently Asked Questions about

Same-Day Dental Crowns

Heading

How long will it take to get a same-day crown?

In the past, receiving a crown took at least two appointments, separated by a two-week wait period. With the CEREC 3D Computer Aided Design and Computer Aided Manufacturing (3D/CAD/CAM) system, we can create ceramic restorations in the course of a single treatment session.

Is getting a same day dental crown painful?

During a dental crown procedure, a dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth that is being restored. The cementing process is fairly quick and, thanks to the anesthetic, completely painless. Post-procedure, most patients experience some mild discomfort that they can alleviate with acetaminophen and ibuprofen.

What is a CEREC same-day dental crown made of?

The CEREC mill starts with a small block of porcelain that it then files down into the shape of the scanned tooth. We choose to use porcelain for our crowns because it’s durable, aesthetically pleasing, and stain-resistant.
